1)  Commercial speech, defined as any communication designed to sell any product, service, or corporate image, is not protected under the First Amendment and may be regulated in the public interest.

2)  The profession known as lobbying is abolished.  No person may be paid for communicating with any legislator, executive, executive department, or regulatory body, other than by reimbursement for expenses by private individuals.

Think of the swarms of lobbyists infesting Washington, D.C. and the state capitals — they would all have to go home and find honest work.  And think of the effect on the housing shortage in D.C.!

Of course, this will be a hard amendment to pass, since all the lobbyists will lobby against it…   which will prove my point.

And this puts private individuals on a par with unions and big corporations.

People who want to lobby from conscience, with no financial stake in the matter, will find their situations unchanged.

I'm a long-ago poli sci graduate of New College in Sarasota, Florida. These ideas have been rattling around in my head for years, many of them obvious, some of them unlikely, and I've decided to post them here to see if anyone else sees things as I do. I disabled the WordPress comments because of spam, abuse, and people selling things. But you can send comments to me at [email protected]. I hope you enjoy the site.
